Sea Freight Transportation

Sea freight transportation Sea freight transportation significantly expands the range of possibilities of delivery. The main advantages of sea transportation are: the lower cost of a delivery compared with air and automobile transportation, the ability to deliver goods from countries and continents with which there is no road access, and the ability to deliver a large quantity of goods in one container. The only disadvantage is the longer transit time (weeks or even months).
The process of sea carriage of goods has never been easy. Until the mid-20th century goods were packed and transported in drums, wooden boxes and bags, what complicated the process of loading onto a ship board, as well as they affected adversely the safety storage on a board. Unloading of ships was so time-consuming that the ships spent more time in a port than at sea actually. Usage of slow-moving land transport for goods transportation from the port to the destination (they were mainly horses) complicated the process. Besides ships of old times could hardly resist strong storms and went down with valuable cargoes. Thus, sea freight transportation throughout the history of mankind was dangerous, slow and expensive. However, an alternative for intercontinental traffic did not exist. The rapid development of railways in the middle of the 18th century emphasized the shortcomings of sea transportation and made they think about any new versions of sea transportation mission. At the same time in England they began to use steel containers for sea transportation. But despite of the innovation the process of loading goods onto ships was based on manual labor until the mid-20th century.

Container shipping
That changed in 1955 when Malcolm McLean, a businessman from North Carolina, has carried out a revolution in the field of maritime trade proposing to use container transportation. McLean took the theory of inter-modality, and it speaks that the efficiency and speed of traffic when multiple modes of transportation are used increases significantly if you use the same container all the way, and do not overload the goods from one transport to another one.
After a short time in 1961 world standards of containers were adopted, and further it facilitated the process of the industry globalization and development. Nowadays containerized sea transport method is the most common in the world. Over 60% of the goods transported by sea are delivered using this method.

Sea shipment
A sea shipment is a shipment transported by means of sea transport. They are both consumer goods (FMCG), equipment and machinery, grain, oil, dangerous goods and outsized cargoes etc. To calculate the cost of sea transportation please fill in the form.
